Recommended Tools & Parts for Cigar Box Guitar Builds

Welcome to your go-to guide for building cigar box guitars! Whether you’re working on your first build or your tenth, this page includes my favorite tools, parts, and resources—plus a few helpful links (including some I’m affiliated with, like StewMac) to make your next build smoother.
📉 Basic Tools for First-Time Builders
You don’t need a full workshop to build a great CBG. Here are the basics I always come back to:
- Hand saw or jigsaw
- Power drill + bits
- Screwdrivers (flat and Phillips)
- Sandpaper or sanding block
- Wood glue
- Clamps (a few, at least!)
- Ruler or measuring tape
Optional, but helpful:
- Soldering iron (for electronics)
- Small files or rasp set
- Fret saw (this one from StewMac is great: StewMac Fret Saw)
🎧 Pickups & Electronics
Want to go electric? There are a few simple ways to add a pickup:
Piezo pickups: Cheap, easy, and fun. Great for that raw bluesy sound.
Magnetic pickups: Cleaner tone and great for players who want to plug into pedals or amps.
Also handy:
- 250K or 500K volume pot
- 1/4″ output jack
- Shielded wire
🔧 Hardware & Parts
Here are some of the most used parts in my own builds:
- Tuning machines (3-a-side or individual)
- Eye bolts or ferrules for the tailpiece
- Bolts or bone for the nut and bridge
- Screws, strap buttons, and washers
Neck wood:
- 1×2 maple, oak, or poplar (from your local hardware store or salvaged)
Cigar boxes:
- Ask your local smoke shop, check eBay, or use a premade box from CB Gitty
💼 Where to Buy Parts
Here are some suppliers I recommend and use myself:
- StewMac — For quality tools, fret wire, soldering gear, pickups, and more.
- CB Gitty — Great source for CBG-specific kits and parts
- Amazon — Especially for piezos and basic hardware
- Your local hardware store — Never underestimate the power of scrap bins and utility drawers
- Thrift shops & garage sales — Awesome places to find knobs, boxes, and inspiration
