Introduction to RD-40 Resonator
This one holds a special place in my collection—my first-ever Dobro, the Regal RD-40 Resonator. It may be classified as an entry-level instrument, but that doesn’t detract from its charm or playability. In fact, I’ve grown quite attached to it over the years.
Construction and Materials of RD-40 Resonator
The body is fully laminated, which some might see as a downside, but in the world of resonator guitars, the key factor is the quality of the resonator cone and hardware rather than just the tonewood. As long as those essential components are solid, the guitar can still produce the rich, metallic, and twangy tone that resonators are known for—and the RD-40 Resonator delivers well in that department.
I had to mention the exceptional quality of the work. The inlay on the headstock looks just amazing!
Some Personal Notes
Beyond specs and construction, this guitar has a deeper emotional and musical significance for me. It was with this very instrument that I first ventured into open D tuning, inspired by none other than Harry Manx. His unique blend of blues and Indian classical music led me down a path of exploration, and the RD-40 Resonator became my companion in that journey.
