DIY Harmonica and Mic Holder: Build It Yourself Easily
Introduction
This post is about my DIY solution to the following problem described below.
Most of you might be knowledgeable about the harmonica holders. These metal things are resting on the musician’s neck and holding the harmonica close to the mouth. That gives the person the freedom to use the hands to play the guitar and accompany the harmonica playing.
But what would you do if you needed to amplify your harmonica sound? Right, you use a microphone. That is fine, but one more thing you will need to worry about in this case. Do not hit the mike with the harmonica, which will produce an unpleasant sound. So you have to control and keep a certain distance between these two constantly.
Possible Solutions
Is there a solution for this? Yes, you have to attach the mike to the harmonica somehow. This way the distance will be constant and the risk of the collision will be eliminated.
I saw people doing many different things. Some use just a piece of wire to attach the mike to the harmonica holder. The others buy professionally made gear to attach the harmonica to the microphone stand.
Here I have to mention that these two methods are based on two different approaches.
In the first case, you have the freedom of moving: the mike is “attached to you”. You can go as far as the cable from the mike lets you. 🙂
And in the second case, you still have free hands for playing the guitar but you stick to the microphone stand.
Personally, I prefer the first approach. I like moving while playing.
I mention just two solutions here. There is more, but what is important is the two approaches: “movable” and “static”.
My DIY Solution.
Now, let me introduce my solution based on the movable approach.
Let me start from another end. Picture… a vacuum cleaner. Well, it’s not the vacuum robot and not a conventional vacuum itself, but the brush-free vacuum head. Or, in other words, a Non-Bristle Cleaner Head. I have a couple of them left from those old-fashioned vacuums. Miraculously, it fits ideally from both ends: the round one for the mike and a flat end to attach the harmonica.
As for the microphone, I constantly attach it with masking tape.
The harmonica goes into the flat hole and should be removed easily and quite often. So I covered the interior walls with electric tape for better friction.
Then, the whole construction is fixed in any ordinary harmonica holder with a spring.
That’s all, actually.
This thing will work with any mike which looks like Sure MD47, I.e. with a small round head.
In my case, it is a DIY microphone, which I made earlier using the pharmacy can for pills and the mike head from the old telephone.
Tip. Don’t forget to wash and clean brush-free vacuum head. 🙂 Remember, you will not only blow, but drow as well!
DIY Holder. Conclusion
Why I love the DIY project, it is an open field for your creativity. The sky is the limit for the fantasy!
If it is a harmonica holder, microphone, stomp box, or musical instrument.
You give a second life to some old things, which is ecologically wise. I had collected almost a hundred neodymium magnets from the broken headphone sets provided by the call center of the company I had worked for. I still have a big part of them for future DIY projects.
And it is just incredible fun to make working things by yourself!
So, put your hands on it and try to create something useful!
